Miaka was just an ordinary girl, until she got swooped into a magical world,
where they tell her she’s The Chosen One. Suddenly, assassins and other
forces are trying to get rid of her. Worry not though. Her guardians are ready
to risk their lives for her—including the gorgeous bishounen
Tamahome. Yes, dear readers, you just read the summary of Fushigi Yugi, a good
example of a Chosen One anime. Such a story line is common in anime. It revolves
around an individual who holds the fate of the world in her hands. She just
doesn’t know it yet.
Girl Power
Have you noticed that most of these Chosen Ones are girls? Sure, there are boys
too like Recca from Flame of Recca, but what about the rest? All girls. Hmmm…
That must mean we kick butt better.

The Troubled Years
I’ve also noticed that most of these Chosen Ones are high school students. The
only Chosen One I can think of who isn’t a teenager is Sakura from Card Captor
Sakura. Most of the others like the girls from Sailor Moon, Akane from Haruka
and Miaka herself are teens. Maybe it has something to do with the common belief
that the teenage years are the worst. There’s already a lot of inner turmoil
going on. You just need to stir things up a bit.

The Guardians
What
Chosen One anime would be complete without the guardians? It depends on the
anime if some of them are from “our” world or not. Most of the time, one or
more of the guardians is in love with the chosen one. Aha! Another subplot. A
love triangle amidst the death threats. However, guardians aren’t always
gorgeous. Plue from Rave comes to mind.

Warning: Do you have all these signs? You might be a
Chosen One yourself. So, be on the lookout for ancient books with symbols you
can't understand. It might suck you in.
Just kidding...
