The MCR
There is no
getting away from the fact; Oxford is a bit of an odd place, especially for
postgraduates. Here, as well of being a member of a department in which
you do your study and research, each postgraduate is a member of a college and in the case of St Anne's you become a member of the MCR (short
for "Middle Common Room”). The purposes of MCR's are to support its students
personally, socially and academically. To people new to oxford this might
sound pretty daft, but they really are a great source of support, freebies
and friends. This section is a brief overview of what both the MCR and St. Anne's College offers its postgraduate members.
The St. Anne’s MCR is run by a group of students (the
MCR committee), financed by the
college, and run under the
guidelines set out in its constitution.
Once every month or so we hold a committee meeting (the minutes of
which are posted here) during which the committee
decides how to spend our budget and put into practice our ideas for running the MCR. There are also at least three general meetings a year to which
everyone in the MCR is invited. This provides everyone with the opportunity to put forward suggestions and provide feedback concerning the MCR. The MCR committee is elected once a year just before Christmas.

St. Anne’s MCR is moderately sized (over 170 members) and has a lot to
offer it’s students. There are two main hubs of MCR activity. The first is
the MCR common room in college (see
directions)
which is open 24 hours a day and offers a place to chill out, catch a
bit of TV, peruse a few newspapers and grab some tea or coffee. There is
also a notice board for posting and obtaining information about various events going on
in the college, university and local area. The second is at Robert Saunders House (which
everyone refers to as RSH) which is the
accommodation in which around 80 St. Anne’s postgraduates live. Both of
these venues are used by the
social secretaries to stage various events, parties and gatherings. The MCR subsidises
sporting activities under the guidance of our sports
secretary. The environment is also a high priority issue at St. Anne’s
and consequently we have a very active environmental Secretary who’s job it
is to promote green practices within the MCR community.

Academically the college is very active in bringing students from a broad spectrum of subjects and disciplines together in
order to broaden horizons and remind everyone that they are not the only
ones going through the trials and tribulations of postgraduate work. Largely this is
achieved using the medium of food. Supervisor’s dinner,
partner’s dinner and subject family dinners are run throughout the
year. More details on these can be found here. There is also financial help available to support your research and to assist in the event of serious unforeseen circumstances.
Welfare wise both college and the MCR are very supporting. We understand that postgraduate study is not always an easy life choice either personally
or academically and thus provide a framework of
welfare support mechanisms to help you through the hard times.
This website provides basic information for current and potential students
so if you have any further questions feel free to
contact one of the committee for further information.
