Gower Local Fisheries Group
This is a forum set up and
chaired by the EA to bring news of any interest to local anglers to the clubs.
The group covers the area from Lougher to Bridgend, and almost all local clubs
attend. The news can vary from enforcement updates to stocking plans for trout
and salmon.
This is where we will update you on any relevant news from these quarterly
meetings. Fish for the future is the name of a new initiative aimed at
sustainable fisheries.
The document can be found on
http://intranet.ea.gov/knowledge/law/34243.aspx
Part of this is the aim to protect eel stocks which have declined by 95%
in recent years. Live fish movement is also changing, with owners and leasers of
waters needing to register their waters by 2010 if they want to carry out any
stocking.

Gnoll fisheries
Work to repair pegs and
access on the fishpond will begin in the new year, anyone who wants to help
should contact a committee member.
The community pond has seen a second stocking of fish provided by the EA, with
1000 rudd, 1500 roach, 500 tench, and 1000 crucian carp.
These fish, although small, will provide great sport in the coming years. |
MELIN REGENERATION SCHEME
This scheme is being undertaken as part of
the communities first project. The scheme is split into two main parts;
the Eaglesbush valley reclamation which aims to provide walks, outdoor
classes, and environmental improvements in the area, and the Galv. site
project, where our clubs interests lie.
The Galv site project takes in the area around the pond as well as the
canal bank, and the aim is to
1 Provide three main walks where people can jog,
stroll, and enjoy the environment.
2 Resurface the galv. pitch for mini football.
3 Provide bird watching hides along the riverbank.
4 Improve access to the pond for walkers and anglers.
5 Clear the area of Japanese knotweed.
The first part of this long term project is to remove the Japanese
knotweed infestation in the area being looked at. to this end the club,
along with members of the Melin community first team, has been in
action spraying the areas affected with weed killer. This is an action
plan which will take a number of years to have any effect but must be
done in a systematic way if it is to have a long lasting effect.
The end result should see a great improvement in the area, with walks
along the canal and river with seats and stopping points for all to
enjoy.
