The lower section, from Tonna to Briton Ferry, is a weedy and slow flowing waterway running through the center of Neath town before ending up at the Wharf in Briton ferry. It holds carp tench bream roach Rudd perch eels and a few chub and pike, as well as the odd trout. It is between 1.5 to 2m deep, and up to 12 to 15m wide in places. Unlike the Tennant canal, this one produces fish during the winter months to the pleasure angler, and match anglers enjoy good sport during the summer months in club events. A stocking program by the club has also recently seen over 5000 roach added to the canal.
